Intent
Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of Mathematics at Bledington Primary School is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to excel in and enjoy Maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and basic maths skills are practised regularly to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information and see the links between topics in Maths.
Implementation
Basic maths knowledge is taught regularly. This includes progression through the Maths Passport scheme, access to Numbots/Times Table Rockstars, and times tables, mental maths and arithmetic questions in preparation for statutory assessments in KS2.
A range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to further deepen their understanding, in line with a Mastery approach to maths learning.
Problem solving skills, in addition to reasoning, are taught using sources such as Nrich.
Use of effective questioning allows children to demonstrate their understanding through explanations of how they reached an answer.
Children are taught through mixed ability whole class lessons as well as through scaffolded group and individual work.
Maths planning sequences ensure that concepts are introduced in an order that builds on prior learning and understanding and that children have access to the knowledge they need to progress and make connections.
Lessons use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.
Maths monitoring and daily assessment allows children requiring interventions and on My plans to be identified and supported.
Assessments within classes are carried out to inform next steps and concepts to be revisited.
Homework is set to consolidate, develop and review children's learning.
Where possible, links are made with other subjects across the curriculum.

The document below outlines the Maths vocabulary children will experience in each year group.
This document outlines the times tables knowledge children are expected to have at each stage of the primary curriculum.
Each week, and at home, children practise key Maths knowledge through using the Maths Passport scheme. When they have proven they are fluent in an objective 3 times they can make progress. As they complete 6 objectives on a Passport they move around the world and then into space. Children are presented with a Certificate to mark these achievements.
