Dear Little Penguins,
Little Penguin Class (Year 2) is taught by Mrs. Discombe on Monday to Friday mornings, when we focus on Literacy and Maths.
This year promises to be an exciting one, with lots of fantastic learning to be done. It has been so lovely getting to know the children, who are settling into the new year beautifully and are getting stuck into learning. Our topic for this half term is the History of Toys and you can view our topic plan below. We will be linking our topic to our learning in Literacy when we explore the lovely Dogger by Shirley Hughes and write our very own exciting adventure stories inspired by Traction Man Is Here by Mini Grey! We will also be writing biographies of Mary Seacole, making connections to Black History Month. In Maths, we are working on number and place value, getting to know the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and developing our problem-solving and reasoning skills.
School reading books are changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This allows your child time to read the book twice, which is recommended in the National Curriculum, and to complete the READ comprehension task which I will set for them in their reading record. We would really appreciate your child having read the book and completed the task so that we can change their book each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Books are currently being quarantined for 72 hours after they have been returned to minimise the spread of germs. Reading the books we send home with your child really does help to progress their reading and comprehension skills. We really appreciate your continued support and assistance with this as it does make such a difference. Reading other books at home is also very much encouraged!
Spellings are set on Mondays and these will be tested on Fridays. Please see below for copies of the homework sheets, which will also be given to the children to take home. The children have spelling homework books to practise these at home. Please do keep these at home and do not send them into school as they are for home use only.
There will also be termly homework which will be given out at the beginning of the term and which will be due back in the last week before the half term break. This will consist of six activities linked to our learning in school and is to be completed across the six weeks.
Please do not bring anything extra into school such as toys. Belongings are very precious and we would not want anything to get lost or damaged. Only having the things your child needs each day (their pencil case containing only stationery, their water bottle, their hand sanitiser and their optional packed lunch) in school also helps us to be especially careful with reducing the spread of germs between home and school.
If you have any queries at all, then please do not hesitate to be in touch. I am really looking forward to meeting you all!
I will add the children's spelling homework to this page each week. Please see below.
Each child has their own homework folder, with six activities to be completed across the six weeks before half term. Please find the letters and activities below.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
