Our Vision for Maths Bledington Primary School

We aim to promote a love of maths through a curriculum that is accessible to all our pupils, enabling them to become positive, enthusiastic and articulate mathematicians who apply their skills to make connections and become great problem solvers. Maths is a tool for life and our intention is to prepare our children, not only for the next steps in their school journey, but for maths in context of their everyday lives.

Our Whole-School Maths Vision is:

  • To foster positive attitudes and excitement of discovery through the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts.
  • To develop a positive mindset and a ‘can do’ attitude in our children, especially when problem solving.
  • To broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in the wider world by making real life connections.
  • To enable our pupils to confidently reason about their mathematics, using a suitable range of mathematical language, recognising its importance for communication and deep thinking.
  • To use a range of models, visual manipulatives and practical resources to develop a deep conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency.
  • To implement the current legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Primary National Curriculum.

Intent

Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of Mathematics at Bledington Primary School is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to succeed in and enjoy Maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, allowing them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Maths fluency is practised regularly to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can increasingly recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

Implementation

Basic maths skills are taught regularly.  This includes progression through the Maths Passport scheme, preparation for the MTC and regular times tables, mental maths and arithmetic tests in preparation for statutory assessments in KS2.

A range of reasoning resources are used within lessons to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to further deepen their understanding, in line with the Mastery approach to maths learning.  In addition, pupils have access to other resources such as Nrich.

Use of effective questioning allows children to demonstrate their understanding through explanations of how they reach an answer.

Children are taught through mixed ability whole class lessons as well as through scaffolded group and individual work, including small group interventions where required.

Maths planning sequences ensure that concepts are introduced in an order that builds on prior learning and understanding.

Lessons use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.

Maths monitoring and daily assessment allow children requiring interventions and/or with specific targets to be identified and supported.

Termly and end of topic assessments are carried out to inform next steps and concepts to be revisited.

Homework is set to develop and review children's learning.

Where relevant, links are made with other subjects across the curriculum.

Impact

As a result of our Maths teaching at Bledington you will see:

  • Engaged children who are challenged.
  • Confident children who can all talk about maths and their learning and the links between mathematical topics.
  • Lessons that use a variety of resources to support learning.
  • Different representations of mathematical concepts.
  • Learning that is tracked and monitored to ensure all children make good progress.

Progression in Maths

The document below outlines the Maths vocabulary children will experience in each year group.

As our children progress on their Maths journey, being fluent in key facts helps them free up brain space to apply their learning to calculations and problem solving. Key facts that you can practise with your child are outlined below.

This document outlines the times tables knowledge children are expected to have at each stage of the primary curriculum.

Maths Passports

Each week, and at home, children practise key Maths knowledge through using the Maths Passport scheme.  When they have proven they are fluent in an objective 3 times they can make progress.  As they complete 6 objectives on a Passport they move around the world and then into space.  Children are presented with a Certificate to mark these achievements.

Passport objectives can be found on Teams.  Please use your normal email and password.
